This winter has been very good in Japan for some of the scarcer species. A single Siberian Crane is with the wintering flocks in Arasaki (Kyushu), and there have also been records of Scaly-sided Merganser and Baer's Pochard on the same island.

This is on the back of records of all of these three species last winter, so it is hoped that these could be becoming more regular.
Hachijojima: In the 30 minutes available between arrival and departure of the ferry, one of our DIY tours had 2/3 Izu Thrushes. On the ferry, there were sightings of Laysan, Black-footed and Short-tailed Albatrosses, and Tristram's and Fork-tailed Storm Petrels.

Karuizawa: A recent DIY tour has seen 4 Copper Pheasants and a Japanese Accentor at Karuizawa.

Sendai River: A DIY tour has just recorded a pair of Scaly-sided Mergansers on the Sendai River in Kyushu.
